Optimizing for Google
means encouraging Google to list one of your Web pages at the top of its search
listing for a specific search query. When optimizing a page for Google, always
remember that it is the people using Google you are trying to reach. Regardless
of any SEO (Search Engine Optimization) tricks you may find to get your website
to the top of a Google search result, you will not stay there very long if you
are not giving people what they are searching for. Each page needs to be
optimized separately. Google lists pages, not websites in its search results.

Deciding on Keywords

Decide on what keywords best describe your Web page. Keywords
are also what people type into Google when searching for information. Try to
use two or three keywords to describe your page. It is difficult to get a
website in the top ranking position for single, popular keywords, like
"cars" or "make money."

Type the keywords describing your website into Google, within
quotation marks, to see how many Web pages Google lists.

Go to the Google Keyword Tool, and type in the same keywords.
This is a free tool that will tell you how many people per month are searching
for a keyword or combination of keywords.

Type a similar keyword combination into the Google search page
and Keyword Tool. For example, if your Web page is about fixing cars, try
"fixing cars," "fixing my car," "restoring cars,"
etc.

Compare the keyword combinations. Select the one that there is a
lot of demand for, but for which there is not as many available pages compared
to the other keywords.

Optimizing Your Page

Put the keyword combination in the name of your Web page file.
For example, if your keywords are "restoring old cars," the file
would be named "www.example.com/restoring-old-cars.html."

Put the keyword combination in the title of your Web page. This
is a tag located after the "<head>" HTML tag at the top of the
page. In our example, you would use "<title>Restoring Old
Cars.</title>."

Put the keyword in the headline of your page, framed within the
"<h1>" and "</h1>" tags.

Write a short description of your page, using the keywords in
the first sentence. Paste it into the top of your page after the
"</title>" tag. In our example, this would be <meta
name="description" content="When restoring old cars, it's
important to..." />." This description is what Google uses to
describe your page in the search results.

Include your keyword combination in the first and last
paragraphs of your Web page content.

Share your Web page with other website owners who write about
your subject matter. Post it on social media websites like Twitter, and social
bookmark websites like Digg, with the hope others will link to your web page.
The more links your web page gets from pages related to your keyword
combination the higher your ranking on Google should be.
